Choosing a Church Website Platform: Questions to Ask Before You Buy

Choose a church website platform around the people, content and integrations your ministry actually needs.

A platform comparison often starts with templates and monthly prices. Start instead with the people who will use and maintain the website. The right platform for a church with one volunteer editor may be different from the right platform for a multi-site team with custom integrations.

Write down the jobs first

List the essential public journeys: service information, events, groups, sermons, giving, contact and next steps. Note who updates each area, how often it changes and where the information already lives. If events are maintained elsewhere, ask whether the site can display them without duplicate entry.

Test the editor, not just the demo

Ask the person who will own the site to change a service time, publish an event and replace a hero image in a trial environment. Can they do it safely without calling a developer? Are there roles and permissions for different contributors? Is there a clear review process before publication?

Understand the full cost and exit route

Check subscription renewals, domain ownership, email, storage, transaction fees, add-ons and support. Ask what happens if you leave. Can you export your pages, images, contacts and forms in usable formats? A low entry price is less useful if the church cannot move its own content.

Check the technical essentials

The site should work well on mobile, support accessible content, allow clear page titles and descriptions, and handle redirects when URLs change. Test form notifications and integrations with the actual systems the church uses. A promised integration is not the same as a working end-to-end journey.

Compare two or three options against the same written requirements. Give more weight to a reliable editor, useful integrations and ongoing ownership than to a template animation. Choose the platform the church can keep accurate and welcoming after launch.
